Puzzle Tips
Start with Tip 1 and keep going until you get the guidance you’re looking for.
-
To solve this puzzle, you should be looking at the two pages in the booklet with a tan background. The page on the left has 6 instructions. The page on the right shows a set of hexagonal tiles.
-
There’s a tan circle on the left-hand page. What might that circle suggest?
-
Is there an object inside the box that could be useful here?
-
The flavor text mentions lighting a candle…
-
Grab the candle lid and place it on top of the circle.
-
Athena’s first instruction says to “find a compass and use it to get your bearings.” How might this relate to the candle lid?
-
What if the candle lid were a compass?
-
If you look closely at the candle lid, you’ll see the 4 cardinal directions indicated (N in the top right, E in the bottom right, S in the bottom left, and W in the top left).
-
Now, onto Athena’s second instruction (“start in a field of snow”). There’s only one snowy tile (bottom row, leftmost tile, has the letter ‘O’). Start there.
-
The third instruction says to travel northeast one tile. Use the candle lid to figure out which direction northeast is.
-
Northeast is directly to the right. This brings you to the the mountain tile with the letter ‘N.’
-
The fourth instruction is to “travel north until you reach a forest.” The candle lid shows that north is up and to the right (about 2:00 on a clock). From tile ‘N’ travel 2 tiles, passing through another mountain (with the letter ‘E’) and landing on a forest with the letter ‘T.’
-
The fifth instruction is to “travel west until you’re surrounded by precisely three different types of terrain.” West is up and to the left (about 10:00 on a clock).
First, you’ll reach a grassy tile with the letter ‘W.’ This tile is surrounded by four different types of terrain (forest, flowers, water, and grass).
Next, you’ll reach a a water tile with the letter ‘O.’ This tile is surrounded by three different types of terrain (flowers, mountains, and grass). This matches the clue.
-
The sixth instruction says to “Continue west until you reach the desert. Finally, without leaving the desert, visit each tile of desert exactly once.”
Going west from the water tile, you’ll pass through mountains (‘S’) then reach the desert (‘I’).
To visit each tile of desert exactly once, you’ll go west to ‘X,’ northeast to ‘F’ then ‘O,’ and east to ‘U’ and ‘R.’
-
What might you do with all the letters you’ve collected along the way?
-
The letters you’ve collected are:
O
N
E
T
W
O
S
I
X
F
O
U
R
-
The letters spell “one, two, six, four.” Enter 1-2-6-4 into the combination lock.
